AIA Brooklyn invites you to submit your work for this year’s Brooklyn Design Awards “BKDA.”
Celebrating the high caliber of design in Brooklyn, the BKDA is open to projects by Brooklyn architects and projects in Kings County by AIA Members from anywhere.

Featuring many entry categories – there IS a category for your project.

• The portal for entries is open now through September 30.
• An invited panel of esteemed jurors will review each entry on its own merits in October.
• Entries are not in competition with each other.
• Award recipients will be notified first week of November.
• Awards Ceremony and Gala on December 8.

Jack Esterson, Founding Partner at Think! Architecture + Design

Jack Esterson is a principal at Think! Architecture + Design. His work at Think! centers on residential, academic, healthcare, non-profit, arts, and adaptive reuse projects. He takes an empathic and humanist approach to every project and engages his clients through the unexpected possibilities of design. In recent years Jack’s work has focused on supportive housing in many of New York’s most underserved communities with the goal of providing compassionate environments for people in need, while enhancing the neighborhoods they inhabit through thoughtful and lasting design. The work also includes affordable housing for low-income families and increasingly supportive and affordable under one roof.

Jenny Gillette, RA, Chief Project Officer, NYC Public Housing Preservation Trust

Jenny Gillette is a registered architect in New York and New Jersey with 20 years of strategic project delivery expertise in both the public and private sectors. Balancing subject matter expertise with sensitivity toward community impact, she has delivered a diverse range of projects on behalf of public owners including community and recreation centers, streetscapes and public plazas, regional transportation facilities, and below-ground infrastructure. She has also developed in-house programs for government agencies such as the NYC Department of Design and Construction and the Port Authority of NY & NJ, building internal capacity for new and alternative project delivery methods. Prior to joining the public sector, she worked at several private design firms on a wide range of projects including custom façade systems, single and multi-family residential buildings, and healthcare facilities in under-resourced environments. She has served on the Historic Preservation Commission in Montclair, NJ, and taught at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Barnard College, a master’s degree in Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin, and is a LEED and DBIA accredited professional.

Marc Harary, RA, Director, Design and Construction at Breaking Ground

Marc is a member of the Housing Development team at Breaking Ground (BG), which develops and constructs affordable and supportive housing in NYC. Marc manages the design and construction process and works with architects, contractors, government agency staff, stakeholders, and multiple Breaking Ground departments to plan, build, and complete residential projects that serve those most in need of housing.

Emma Williams, Brooklyn Community Housing & Services

Emma Williams has dedicated over 18 years to improving the lives of those around her through fundraising, communications and non-profit management for organizations in New York City and Alabama, her home state. She harnesses these experiences in her role as Chief Development Officer at Brooklyn Community Housing & Services (BCHS), where she leads efforts in fundraising, communications, and policy. Williams previously held positions at prominent non-profit organizations Children’s Aid and Habitat for Humanity. She earned a BFA in Drama from NYU Tisch School of the Arts.

The tour will be led by Sarah Drake, AIA, past president of AIA Brooklyn.

This casual tour is open to all skill levels. The event will wrap up with a social stop at Five Boroughs Brewing Co. 🍻

Join AIA Brooklyn’s Committee on the Environment for a walking tour of a truly unique rooftop landscape and a reclaimed waterfront amidst one of Brooklyn’s most industrial quarters.

The Newtown Creek Alliance will begin our tour on the 25,000-square-foot Kingsland Wildflowers green roof that serves as an urban oasis and pollinator garden followed by the Newtown Creek Nature walk, a meandering public art space created by NYC’s Department of Environmental Protection. The evocative evening will be rich with discussions of environmental conservation and restoration and highlighted by remarkable views, both gritty and glorious.

Directions: 15-minute walk east along Greenpoint Avenue from the Greenpoint Avenue “G” Station or a 4-minute walk from the Citibike dock at Greenpoint Ave. & Monitor St. Tour ends at the corner of end at the corner of Paidge Ave. and Provost St. Worth the trip.
